Your Next Getaway Plan

Sidestep the beach when you snowbird this Winter. Here are 4 coastal nests just outside the usual hotspots.

Fernwood Resort

Big Sur, CA FernwoodBigSur.com

Everyone loves snowbirding in San Diego (if you’ve got the dough). But snowbirding Big Sur is different. And the Fernwood Resort gets that. Here, nature is your neighbor. You can hike right into Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park from your campsite. And park by the Big Sur River under great tree cover. With a store and a restaurant onsite, you can do almost everything on foot.

Trinity Bay RV Lodging

Anahuac, TX TrinityBayRVLodging.com

Texas, like Florida, is a snowbird magnet. And rubbing up against the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico isn’t hurting anything. Trinity Bay RV Lodging takes you out of Houston’s bustle and
parks you a few hundred feet from the bay. With 75 concrete sites, lush scenery, great amenities, and reasonable rates, it’s perfect—whether you’re remote working or just lounging.

Champions Run

Ocala, FL Sunlight-Resorts.com

Sometimes, you just want everything right where you park. Champion’s Run certainly thinks so. The beach is still under an hour away, but you might be too busy to go. This Sunlight Resorts community has 387 sites, concrete pads, free high-speed Wi-Fi, a 12,000-foot clubhouse, pickleball courts, resort-style pools, billiards, and ballrooms… sorry … lost my breath there. Just so much stuff.

Holden Beach RV Campground

Supply, NC HBRV.net

Halfway between Myrtle Beach to the south and Wilmington to the north (and about an hour from each), is the Holden Beach RV Campground. Out of the way, these private grounds are an absolute gem. Covered by mature live oaks, the sites are clean. The amenities are wonderfully complete. And the Atlantic is merely two miles away—with a Tiki Trolley Beach Shuttle to take you there.

I Heart TIPS

If you like to surf—or want to learn— Winter is your opportunity to ride giants. The big waves come then. Lucky for you, the beach is a short drive away from the resort.

I Heart TIPS

When you’re ready to launch out, jump over to Space Center Houston. It’s great for any age, but if you’ve got kids or grandkids, bring ‘em. They’ll have a blast.

I Heart TIPS

We were kidding before. We know you need to get out. And 10 minutes away, you can find any adventure you like—ziplines, kayaking, riding horses, and more— at Zip the Canyons.

I Heart TIPS

Take a guided kayak tour and paddle along the narrow Intercoastal Way. Keep your eyes peeled for spotted dolphins and loggerhead turtles during the two-hour saltwater cruise.
