One Red-Hot Handle

Talking with the campers we love and follow on social media

The journey of 1,000 miles may begin with one step, but an epic RV journey of 10,000 miles? That begins with a big decision. But for one adventurous, multinational family, there’s never been a better time than this Summer to say goodbye to the old routine and hello to the open road. After running a busy RV rental business for five years, they’ve decided that it’s their turn for adventure. Heck, they even have nicknames picked out.

Who’s on board? “The Bossman,” Captain of the RV and a predictably punctual German. Then there’s his Irish copilot, “The Wife,” and their American daughter, “The Testy Teen.” (And we haven’t even mentioned the aunts—or cats.) See what “The Wife” has to say about their once-in-a-lifetime trip to see America the Beautiful together.

Why the Epic Time Is Now

My husband, “The Bossman,” has been chained to an office desk for over 30 years and is set to start his new job mid-August. So, now he is free to explore and fulfill his dream of a long road trip. As a high school teacher, I’m always willing to hit the road and find new places in the Summer. Our London-based sisters, “The Wanderly Wagons,” are also finishing off sabbatical years from business and spending the Summer as our tag-a-longs. Our daughter, “The Testy Teen,” will get her driver’s license in August. (Once she can drive, we will have to book an appointment to see her!)

A Journey of 10,000 Miles

After 10 years of RVing, we are ready to take Remi, our 36-foot Thor Motor Coach Hurricane 35M, on “The Epic RV Road Trip” of almost 10,000 miles. The journey just started June 4 outside of Philadelphia, and it goes down the East Coast to St.  Augustine, over to New Orleans, up through Texas and New Mexico to Colorado. From there, we head into Utah, Oregon, Washington State, and Montana. The highlight of our trip will be Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands. There is so much to see in America. We can’t wait. It is going to be EPIC.

The Testy Teens Take

Is she excited about the Epic Trip? The trip of a lifetime? The chance to see the beautiful U.S. of A. Well, not quite. Here’s her take: You are kidding me, right? Two months cramped in with four adults (one that’s vegan), one teen, and two cats in one RV. I’d rather die. (Her aunts initially were supposed to house-sit with her, but once they saw the itinerary, they blagged their way onto the entire trip.) So, it might be a miracle if we all make it back alive. The question is: Who will get thrown out of the RV first? Join us to find out.
