Rebounding RV Sales

The pandemic era had surprising effects on the economy, including a large uptick in sales of RVs from popup trailers to luxurious motorhomes to van-life purchases, as many people escaped to the outdoors. Often for the first time. The big spike in sales flipped the industry on its head. However, once society returned to “normal,” the aftershock of the influx of RVs, combined with a staggering increase in interest rates, led to RV sales plummeting. Many potential RVers bought early due to low borrowing rates after the pandemic, leading to a ~40% increase in 2021 from
2020. In turn, this drained some of the expected 2022 and 2023 sales. And by 2023, RV orders plummeted from over 600,000 in 2021 to just 313,000 in 2023.

While consumers are still showing some hesitancy, RV retailers are once again seeing mild improvements in demand. And the industry is starting to exhibit cautious but growing optimism. RV shipments are beginning to pick back up, and once interest rates start coming down, industry experts expect it to trigger more active RV consumers again. Thus, the RV industry is once again returning to equilibrium, with shipments, production, and sales being more closely aligned. People’s desire to purchase and own an RV is still strong.

And once inflation, interest rates, and opportunity align, they’ll be able to make their dreams of adventure in a new RV a reality. In the meantime, many people are finding some pretty good deals, as folks who bought during the pandemic found their #vanlife purchases didn’t pan out and are now looking to sell, or fell in love with the RV lifestyle and are now ready for an upgrade.
