Racing Through the Red Rocks of Moab

4 ways to go off-road and max out Moab, Utah’s world-class ATV trails

HITTING A BUMP IN THE ROAD can actually be awesome especially if you’re on an off-road adventure in Moab. Cutting through Utah’s stunning Red Rock landscape, Moab’s twisting trails are best explored on all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). And there are plenty of high-adrenaline options for every experience level. So whether you’re seeking a new adventure—or have already loaded up your toy hauler to go Mad Max on the trail—let this guide be your jumping-off point to one of the country’s best off-road destinations.

Go with the Guide

New to off-roading? Nix the risk and max out the fun by snagging a guide to handle the boring—but super important!—details like choosing the route and carrying the first-aid supplies. Take your pick between riding in a 4WD Jeep, Hummer, or ATV/ UTV, with prices starting around $90 per adult from local companies like Moab Adventure Center.

Bring Out Your Hellions

If they can walk, they can ATV (although Utah law prohibits anyone under age 8 from driving). Family-friendly tours abound and are an excellent option for aspiring explorers, as private ATV/ UTV riding is prohibited in nearby Arches and Canyonlands. Not a fan of guided tours? The low-key Gemini Bridges ride guarantees hours of excitement for kiddos and adults alike.

Tear Your Own Path

Adventurers with their own ATVs have their pick of roads less traveled in Moab’s sprawling backcountry. The intermediate-level Chicken Corners Trail provides dazzling views without a ton of technical know-how, but the advanced Kane Creek Canyon ride will boost your adrenaline levels. Pro tip: Bring towing equipment and water!

Form Your Favorite Posse

Expect to spend a couple of hundred bucks on an all-day rental from outfits like Moab Tour Company, plus the promise of some seriously epic Instagram pics. Hidden Canyon is a scenic (and relatively smooth) ride with absurdly gorgeous views that promise to thrill your inner daredevil as you and your squad race past each other. It’s the adventure out West your posse will never forget.
